From the Italian authority in our office, and my Spanish background - lento is slow in both languages, and dolce is sweet in Italian (dulce in Spanish). The ending -issimo means very. So, I agree with Eoin and Dee, it means to play the passage slowly and sweetly.

I misread the definition in my Harvard Brief Dictionary of Music. It defines dolce as:

dolce. Sweet, soft; dolcissimo, very soft.

Sorry for the misinformation.
