 store-bought oboe reeds
Author: musichick

Ok, I know a lot of oboe players will kill me for this one, but here it goes: I can't make my own reeds because I dont have a private teacher, no one to teach me, and im also really busy with stuff. So if I have to buy store made reeds, whats the best type? So far I think gower and selmer arn't bad, and I've heard stuff about "forest." Any information about any types?

the best oboe reed that I had an experience with, and that my younger friends have had experience with, is Lyric reeds. It must be the type of cane they use. I say this on basis of store bought reeds: I would really work on finding a reputable source to handmake them, even if it isn't a private teacher. Handmade reeds usually have better stability, a better crow, and obviously a better tone. Once in a while they are usually more in tune.

I also don't have a private teacher and buy store-bought reeds. I have found that Jones reeds work the best. Their website is www.jonesdoublereed.com You can also get professionally handmade reeds from Forrests Music. They have a website also, it is www.forrestmusic.com

I also think that Jones are good reeds. Those are the best reeds I've used. And I've had some pretty bad ones! But Jones' reeds seem to be the best I have found besides soe that my tutor made for me. I know that Rico reeds aren't good though. I hope you find one that fits your taste.

However, most all store bought reeds have too much cane in certain places (Especially near the tip on the sides). Even if you don't have a teacher and you don't know how to make a complete reed, learning how to scrape off some cane to perfect a store bought reed is probably a good idea.
