Our clarenets sound realy bad. (Not just because this is our first playing.) We've started playing full band arangements and sound farily desent. But the clarenets are playing these new realy high notes useing the regester key. A lot of people are disturbed about this. What can make them better?

I play clarinet, and you are sposed to use the register key on high notes.

I don't know much about clarinet but i do know if you don't use the register key you can't play high notes. Just tell them to practice and if they don't like it thats their problem.

When I read Lauren's post, I see "using the register key" as a descriptive rather than a conditional phrase. I mean I think she's saying her band's clarinets sound bad when they play notes that require the register key, not that they sound bad because they're using the register key as opposed to not using it on those notes.

And I can understand how people might find novice clarinetists playing high notes "disturbing". Heck I find most clarinet playing "disturbing" unless it's done exactly right. :)

That's also about the most insightful thing I have to offer since I know next to nothing about the clarinet, except that it is completely different from the oboe.

really you must identify the problem clearly before asking for advice, THEN we can really help you

The only way to make the high notes sound good on a clarinet is to practise a lot.

Erm, unlike the flute which doesn't have the octave key, I don't think they depend on their embouchures to play between octaves.

ok, i know what your going through. the clarients need to make sure that they aren't loosening their embourchure too much or the tone is gross. and make sure that they aren't to tight or the tone goes higher then you want it to. another problem maybe that you aren't used to hearing this sound so you may think it's one of the worst sounds. i remember when i hit my first clarion notes everyone hated me because they thought it was awful, because they hadn't heard those high pitch notes before. And another possibility is that they're really flat, sometimes those notes go flat and they sound awful. so give them time so they can get used to these new notes, and if there still is a problem, your band director will most likely know how to fix it.

make sure that they're not losening OR tightening the embosure because the problem most of the time with high note are that its out of tune.
