 reeds (sax)

Hi Chaps,

After 5 years of saxophone "studies", I've bought a set of Van Doren 3 reeds. Now, after playing some pieces, I can't really find the difference. Someone tell me please :). Is it harder/more difficult to reach altissimo, or what is it?

With regards

well it depends on what you had before. usually, the harder the reed, the easier it is to hit altissimo, because it won't collapse as much. Generally most people start on 2 to 2 1/2, and then as they acquire a stronger embouchure, they move to harder reeds. It is not anymore "professional" to use harder or softer reeds. I've heard someone play marginally better on a 2 1/2, as compared to someone on a 4. It really depends what works for you. Whichever reed lets you keep a fast air stream going through, and lets you produce a full rich tone, that's the one you should use.

Aye, I was using a 2 1/2 reed before (for 5 years). I however was not yet able to reach the altissimo register (well, the Fa#, but that isn't BBC World-news). With these 3 reeds, I've managed to hit Sol and Sol#, but probably that'll be just a mental question. Still a long way, I suppose.

Thanks for the reply, d-oboe.

i ve noticed that 3 1/2 vandoren reeds keep a balance between air flow, tone, and altissimo for me on the clarinet better than a 3 or anything lower. so its basicaly what works for you. Sure you can play on a reed but ask yourself will it work for me in the long run?

It can be many diiferent thing....for example i play on a vandoren 3 1/2 and i can hit altissimo real well but another saxist at my school cant do it on a 3 1/2 but a four better. It depends on what is better for you.
