Today, in band we sight read a piece and it was in 6/8 time. I have never played 6/8 before and it was really hard and fast for me. I have no idea how to count measures and notes in 6/8. Please help!!!

6/8 time is almost like 2 for every beat the conductor gives you 3 have acctualy passed so when he get to 1 you would go 123 then on his way up to 2 you would go 456. So its like 123 456 ect... like an 8th note will get one of the beats that you count in your head.
Example: 3 8th notes you could count as 1 2 3 each number being a beat of the total of 6. So 6 8th notes is 1 2 3 4 5 6.
Doted quarter notes are the eaysiest to play becuase they get 3 of the 6 beats. So every time your conducter gives you a beat thats one doted quarter note.
Quarter notes on the other hand a a little difficult. you allways half to be subdividing in your head 123 456, 123 456. The quarter note gets only 2 of the 6 beats. so one quarter note you would count 12 and then if you had an 8th note after it it would be 12 3. 12 is the quarter note and the 3 is the 8th note.
6/8 time is tricky at first but after you get the hang of it, it should get much eaysier and you will be able to play it like 4/4 time. I wish i was able to give you diagrams and stuff it would make it alot eaysier for me to explain this to you. If you want I can make up some diagrams and then email them to you. In a fast 6/8 the dotted quarter (so,three eighths)gets one beat. If you ever see three quarter notes in 6/8, it is usually played as if it were 3/4. (they have the same number of notes mathematically.) As for playing in a fast 6/8, think of it as triplets in a 2/4 measure. (1-trip-let, 2-trip-let). 6/8 time will come naturally, it's just unfamiliarity, that's all.
