Play for Fun

Any ideas for a FUN instrument to play? I play piano and oboe for my music degree, but would like something to chill out on. Something I could pick up on quickly, and play FUN music? Possibly something more unusual....any suggestions?

BASSOON!! im like the only one in my school who plays it, and you can play the soprano or bass part. i have had such a great experience with it, sure its big heavy and hard to hold, but once you get the hang of it, its really fun. once and awhile you need a break from you regular instruments, i know, thats what happened to me, i got tired of the flute, so i started playing the bassoon and i LOVE IT!!!

hope this helps

The alto sax is the ultimate fun instrument. It's not too heavy, easy to play and is generally reckoned to be THE instrument for people who don't wan't to practice too hard. If you're already playing two other instruments seriously, you won't have time for much practice on the sax. With your oboe training, you shouldn't find the embouchure or the fingering too much of a problem.

If you want something different, i can suggest a few, bass flute, contrabass clarinet, contrabassoon, contrabass sax, alto clarinet, or if you want to be really different, you could try contabass flute, or octobass flute, but those are really hard to learn, so bassoon, or like torus said the tinwhistle would be easy to learn.

well, the oboe isnt as common as some other instruments *cough* trumpet *cough* so if they didnt laugh at that why would they laugh at the tin whistle.

and if they do, its out of jealousy

If you have chosen tin whistle, get a model in D. This is the most useful one for playing traditional Irish music. I've written reasonably comprehensive guide to playing the tin whistle which you can find at:

Umm... I don't think you can really consider the tinwhistle to be on the same level as the oboe... It's not like it's some oddball instrument that has been relegated to obscurity just because so few people are able to play it. I think anyone who would laugh at the oboe isn't jealous, but rather ignorant.
