I'm going to university in England next year, studying music. I want oboe as my first instrument, but haven't had a teacher in over a year. What should I do in order to prepare my pieces (there are no oboe teachers near where I live any more).....Awaiting ANY suggestions. Thanks Mill.

I say that it would be a good idea to get your hands on all kinds of music, and practise until you can't possible practise anymore, then practise some more. and whatever pieces you get, try to find a recording of it to make sure that you have the right rythme and speed. hope this helps.

Other than just saying practice practice practice everyday, I would say first to be sure to have a plan for each piece you play. That is you should know exactly what kind of articulation, tone color, vibrato, etc. you will use to shape every measure of every phrase in the piece.

Getting a good recording is a great idea, not just to get an idea of the tempo, but also to give you some ideas about the musicality of the piece as a whole.

Recording yourself might also be a useful way to check your progress and to see how close your actual playing comes to what you would want the piece to sound like.

What pieces are you considering playing? Also, if you're going to school for oboe in England, does that mean I can assume you're living in England right now?
