If you are just starting the best flutes are, Armstrong, Gemeinhart, and Yamaha. If you are looking for an intermediat or more advanced flute the best are Pearl, Brannen Brotherss, Miyazawam Muramatsu, Altus, and Gemeinhart. You will want to try these flutes out before you buy one, unless you are just starting you don't need to b/c you won't know the fundementals of a flute yet. If you want to buy an intermediate flute make sure that you can play it in tune with a tuner and that it makes a sound that you like.

Hope this has helped

Even when you first buy it, you should look to see if there is any noticeable damage, and also buy from a respected music store. When you buy it, ask for a professional(ask to see his card, and practicioner's licence) to play-test it before giving it to you.

Have fun on flute!

you really don't need to play test it if you are just a beginner but if you are and Intermediate flutiest you deffinetely want to play test it. The reason you don't want to play test it if you are a beginnner is because you do not know how to play a flute and there for don't know what to look for or what it should play like. If you are in band ask your band director to help you pick one out. If u are not in band ask the music store Flute Specialist to help you out.

I had a Yamaha when from sixth grade all the way into two years of college, then hurt my hand so I could not play for a while. I gave it to my brother who is a band director, and the flute is still being played by one of his students. With yearly trips to be checked out for any needed adjustments and repairs, that flute has been in action since 1981 and is still going strong.
