i've got this really really hard fast bit in a piece for a woodwind quintet that i'm in, so i must play it as i am the only flute there. i've practised the bit for hours every day in every possible way i can, changing the tempo, articulation and whatnot, i've tried EVERYTHING to get it right but i can't. now i think it is impossible to play. my first question is: is there another way to change from high D to high F and to F# extremely fast, like another fingering for it? my second question: would it really matter if i changed the music every so slightly in that bit so i can play it, like leave some notes out? it's not a piece that anybody knows, and i don't think anyone would notice much if i changed it a little. it's quite a weird piece of music and it sounds horrible on purpose. that's another reason why i hate it.

thanx.

Be practical. It won't matter if you change it. I've heard professional singers saying that they occasionally sing any old note in chromatic sections of modern pieces and nobody knows the difference. After the performance, you can consider this a personal challenge: to improve enough that you can play this piece correctly as the composer intended.

Gnomom is right. It is ok to leave out a few notes. I don't know any finguring for the High D to F to F# that would make it any easyer. And like Gnomon said before after the preformance try to play it correctly. It will deffinetly make you a better player in the end if you can do it. And i know you can. even though i don't know how good you really are i know you can do it. Anyone can do anything if they try hard enough. Good Luck!

My band director always says, 'if you can't play it, don't play it'. But this depends on what you're playing for the quintet...I recently joined a sax quartet at school that's going to contest, and we're judged on how we play the music...if I had a hard part, i'd have to practice it a lot, because the judge will have a copy of the music and know if I'm not playing what's written. If this is your case, I suggest you try your best to play what is written, but if it's just a group that is doing something for a concert, then by all means change what you need to.

thanks guys. i think i'll just leave out some notes or change it a little. i'll probably want to rip up the piece after the concert. who knows, i might even set the goal to play it correctly.
cheers
