 How to trill
Author: SaxOgirL

HI. This may seem like a dumb question but i have music where there are TRs over some notes. I'm assuming those are trills. When they don't get you a note to trill to do you go up or down. For example, if the note is a B on my sax, do I trill up to a C or down to an A. Please Help!! THanks

In most music, you trill to the next whole step higher. Unless the composer tells you otherwise. In some types of music, however, the trills are treated differently. For example, in a Broque piece generally repeat the trill note then trill.

The trill is to the note above the written note in the scale you are in. If the key signature is C major, a trill on E will alternate between E and F. If the key signature is E major, a trill on E will be between E and F#.

A trill usually goes to the next higher note, but not necessarily a whole step up-- it's the next note up in the key you are in. For example, if you are in the key of Bb and the note you had to trill was D, you'd go to an Eb instead of E because E isn't in the key of Bb. I hope that explains it a little.
