There've been lots of posts on here where I've talked about "the ideal oboe sound" with respect to your own playing, compared to the "ideal sound" of countries other than the US, or generally defending the oboe from the prejudices levied against it by people wanting to judge its sound solely on hearing the playing of novice oboists in their local or school bands.
So I offer to you the WFG faithful some brief one minute excerpts I found online of my idea of what the oboe is supposed to sound like.
You're going to be listening to one of the most beautiful oboe solos in its orchestral repetoire, Mvt. II of Respighi's <i>Gli Uccelli ("The Birds"), La Colomba (The Dove)</i>. Just follow this:
1. Go to www.cdnow.com
2. Click on the blue tab at the top of the screen that says "Music"
3. At the search window at the top left portion of the screen, select "Classical Music" for the type of search
4. Type in "Respighi - Gli Uccelli"
5. You will see 10 CD choices of 19. Click on number 9, the CD with the Purple cover.
6. Scroll down to the section called "Listen to Samples" and click on choice number 5, "Gli Uccelli: Jacques de Gallot: La Colomba - Saint Paul CO".
At this point you should enter some sort of cathardic trance as you begin to hear none other than the Almighty Herself Kathy Greenbank (whose playing I have extolled over and over on this forum) play one of the most beautiful solos ever written for oboe. Even if the sound quality isn't so good on this sample, <i>that</i> is ideal oboe playing to me.
If you think you can stand anymore, go back and select CD choice number 5 (Classical Zoo) and listen to Jonathan Dlouhy do it with Atlanta. (Here it's in English, so select The Birds II. The Dove).
Then go back and select CD choice number 8 and listen to John de Lancie do it with Philadelphia.
An added bonus is that on the same page there are CD's of orchestras from other countries besides the US playing the same piece. Select CD choice number 10 to hear the London Symphony Orchestra do it, choice number 7 to hear the Bournemouth Sinfonietta do it (also English), and choice number 13 on the next page to hear the Australian Chamber Orchestra do it. See if you can hear the differences.

It may be my sound system, but the samples are very fuzzy. I couldn't make any judgement on them.
