 Tenor Saxes
Author: weirdo

I'm thinking of purchasing a tenor sax after renting one for a while. I want one that is a good price, (under $1,000 if possible) but that plays well. My main instrument is the clarinet, so the main thing I'd be using the sax for is jazz band. I found some on the Woodwind Brasswind site that are good prices, but does anyone know the good models to purchase?

i'd suggest a Selmer or a Yamaha. i've asked a few people, in my city's concert band, and these are two manufactures that they recommended.

I'm sure those are both great models, but they are pretty much out of my price range. What about something like a Jupiter or a Blessing? They are both fairly cheap on Woodwind Brasswind's site.

I suggest the Jupiter. A few months ago I purchased an Artist Tenor from WWBW, and I absolutely love it. I also suggest that if you can get to South Bend, IN (I live in Illinois, so it wasn't to long of a drive to get there) you should go to their show room. You can tell them your price range, and they'll help you find a horn, and let you try out as many horns as you like. One brand you should def. stay away from is Allora, which is more expensive, and not all that great. Also, in my experience, Yamaha (or any of the other Japanese brands) aren't all that great for jazz band, which is what you said you'd be using the saxophone for, and they're more expensive than other brands that would suite your purpose better. But the nice thing about the WWBW showroom is that you can try out all the saxophones yourself, and make your own decision, but i really suggest you make sure to give Jupiter a try :)

Also, the chance is slim, but be on the lookout for used Selmers...sometimes you can find gently used tenors for great deals!

If you or your parents don't mind on spending a lot of money buying a proffesional tenor sax...I suggest you get a Yanagisawa. They are really good and I got to play one that was a year old for marching season this year and I loved that tenor sax.

I used to play sax a while back. If you plan on continuing with saxophone, or even clarinet for that matter. It would be a better investment to buy a slightly better version. Buying new has its advantages: you get the guarantee that nothing majorly wrong has happened to it, and in some cases, if you buy it from a band/instrument shop, you can even get free repairs for a year or so after you buy it. However buying new does also mean that if you do ever go to sell it, you will have to sell it at a much lower price than what you paid for it. Consider buying used: Most used instruments still work, and a portion of those will even last for many years after. When you go to sell it, it is very probable that you will be able to sell for close to what you bought it for. Be sure you, when you buy used, or new even, that you are dealing with someone who knows what they're talking about, and if you're sorta new to this, go to a professional music instrument distributor. Sorry to break that bad news, but if you are looking to upgrade, you will have to pay at least 2000$ for a used sax, or starting from 3000$ for a new one. Take it from me, I bought a very nice professional french oboe, used(8 years), for 3500$. If it was new it would cost 8000$. My point: instruments aren't cheap; you get what you pay for. Oh another thing, DON'T EVER buy off the internet, whatever you do.

Selmer is a nice brand, and i personnally would want one, Jupiters are ok, but the bad thing is they have the tednecy to bend on the brass, so they're ok while they last. If you wanted a real good horn, Selmer or Cannonball would be the way to go, i got my Cannonball on ebay for 1k, and it has never let me down, the only way you would pay alot for one of these is a real high bid of from a music store, they don't sell over the iternet new. the site is http://www.cannonballmusic.com/ . check it out some time.

wouldn't you have wanted to test play the saxophone first? I would never buy something until I was sure that it was functional.
