if this is your first insrument, then i would highly recommend that you get some private lessons. if you already play an instrument, ask someone who plays a double reed instrument for help, and get a fingering chart for your instrument. you shouldn't have much trouble picking up a new instrument if you already understand basic music concepts. ;-)

Here's a tip, go to this site:

http://www.public.asu.edu/~schuring/Oboe/oboeinfo.html

This is by far the best site on the internet for oboists. It's got a ton of information, and I would recommend reading it all.

Two other things I would say would be a) don't rely on storebought reeds for very long. Find an oboist who makes his own reeds and buy from him or her. It's very hard to make progress on a bad reed. b) Get some recordings of other oboists and listen to them closely. This will help you to formulate in your mind what an oboe should sound like, and it should be this sound that you should ultimately strive for in your playing.

If you have any other questions just post them here, and welcome to the aristocracy!

Welcome! Im so glad you've joined the best of the elite group of instruments. I've been playing for about 3 years and i'm still learning new things.
the following are some key points to help you learn this insrument:
1)keep an open mind!! You won't be able to get everything the first time.
2) the oboe is a difficult instrument so take your time
3) One of the most important things to remember to have fun!!!
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to post them here. I will do my best to answer them
peace out!!
