I play the clarinet, but I want to be in the jazz band at my high school. I decided to learn to play the tenor sax and I'm having real trouble getting the lowest notes. They always come out higher then they should. I only have a month before Jazz tryouts. Can somebody help me here?

Weirdo, I used to play the clarinet and took up the alto sax. I had exactly the same problem as you. Here's what I found.
1. You have to wet the reed a lot more in the sax than in the clarinet. You should suck both ends of your reed for a few minutes before playing.
2. You have to put more of the reed in your mouth than in a clarinet.
3. You embouchure should be more relaxed. Try dropping your jaw.
No doubt some experienced sax players can give you better advice.

hey man! if you can't get the low notes out, it's probably your tenor. go to a M&M music store or a bill hardin or the next closest thing and ask if you can rent one of their tenors. then see if it's still you. try dropping your jaw...................alot because the clarinet requires for a much tighter embouchure.
Keep trying. I'm sure a better sax player could help you out.

What you need to do is loosen up your lips. I play the clarinet and the tenor saxaphone. I had the same problem. The saxaphone is very sensitive when it comes to your embochure(lips).
