Author: Atari

I am having trouble producing clear eflat, e and f (the high ones) straight away (ie not slurring but tonguing on the note). Has anyone any advice. Thanks a lot.

Well the first thing to try would be taking more of the reed into your mouth and increasing the intensity of the air stream. If that doesn't work, I would look carefully at the horn and make sure there are no leaks.

Also, as you move up higher on the oboe, your emboucure should change from a more rounded "O" shape to more like you're saying the letter "E", meaning the corners of you mouth should be drawn back ever so slightly, all the while increasing the intensity of the air.

And sometimes unfortunately it just depends on the horn itself. The oboe I had before my current one simply sucked at producing high notes, no matter how much reed you decided you were going to take into your mouth.

And of course it could be a reed problem too. Isn't playing the oboe fun? What kind of reed are you playing on?

Anyway, good luck with it.

Those high notes can be tricky! i'm an eight grader and i can spit these notes out easily, it's not so hard. When you get up at that register, you have to have VERY FAST air, don't back away. Keep a firm embochure, don't bite! KEEP BLOWING, even if you want a soft response, if you need any other questions on oboe, feel free to e-mail me!
