 Cut time
Author: Donna

Although I don't play the sax myself, my daughter is a second year sax player. She is having a difficult time understanding cut time. Her teacher requires that they clap it out, but he will not give them help or time to work on it in class. Any suggestions for me to use to help her would be appreciated. I know very little about this topic, so I can not help her much. Thanks

Cut Time is the same as 2/2 time. That means that the half note gets a beat and that there are two beats per measure.

The result is that quarter notes only get a half beat instead of the full beat that your daughter is probably used to (i.e. two quarter notes per beat). Similarly in cut time there are four eighth notes per beat.

To fully explain it is just a mathematical difference. The only difference between 4/4, 2/2(cut time) and 8/8 is which duration gets the beat. In one measure of 8/8 there are 8 "pulses" each on of these pulses is an eigth note.(1 pulse for each eigth note.) For 4/4, there are 4 pulses, and each one of them equals a quarter note.(1 pulse for every 2 eigth notes) In 2/2 there are 2 pulses, and each one equals a half note. (1 pulse for every 4 eigth notes.) Typically 2/2 is used when a pulse is desired only on every set of 4 eigth notes, instead of every two like in 4/4 time

Hope this explains it
