To any oboe, saxophone, and bassoon players

I am an oboe and alto saxophone player that possibly (if my band director doesn't forget I asked) may switch to bassoon. Can anyone give me any advice or differences between the bassoon and the other 2 instruments I play?

The bassoon reeds will last longer than your oboe reeds because the surface space is larger. Hopefully the instrument will be in good condition and the pads will not leak. Search out a basic beginner band book for bassoon in order to find an easy to read fingering chart. Also you will be reading bass clef so you need to "relearn" the lines and spaces. The blowing technique for oboe and sax will be quite similiar for the bassoon. Good luck if your director follows through.

You will need to know a completely new fingering system. Your left thumb will need considerable dexterity with nine keys to operate. Be sure to keep your jaw back. Get a good instrument. Study hard!

Fingerings: the right little finger key pattern of the oboe and bassoon is the same in terms of up and down (e.g. the key furthest away from the ring finger goes 1/2 step UP on both [d to Eflat on oboe / G to A flat on bassoon]). The F key of the oboe has a corespondent B-flat for the right thumb of the bassoon (1/2 step up from basic five fingers). The bassoon is weird among woodwinds in not having a 1/2 step higher function for the left hand little finger (G# on oboe or bassoon), but of course the function is in the left THUMB. Good luck in acquiring your big flat thumbs!

Well I did it - so can you ! My original instrument was oboe, but I also picked up the flute and sax - no big deal there.. they all have the same fingering system. It was more of a change to switch to bassoon - particularly because of the bass clef issue. But you'll love the sound so much that you'll work at it. Get those thumbs working !

I play all the same instruemnts and i would have to say the bassoon and oboe are a lot a like and the alto is just out there. I like the bassoon and oboe becuase you dont have to change a lot to play both. so if you can play the bassoon go for it

nothin very special abut the oboe to the basson. it's just much heavier and the keys are spread apart.

well they fingerings of the bassoon are like nothing that you have ever seen so be prepared to learn some new fingerings, your oboe expeirience will make the adjust a little easier though.
