i want to add this
I have my eyes on the clarinet or the saxophone. I am in 10th grade and some of those people in band.. well lets say arent the brightest lights in the world and they certanly dont look like they practice alot, so is it hard to learn an instrument?. i know it isnt a walk in the park but please encourage me ( even if it is a lie ;-) )

about how much does it cost to rent a clarinet for a month or so. And which brand/kind of clarinet should i get ??

It is quite possible to take up an instrument in the 10th grade. I would recommend private lessons though.

People in their 70s, who have never played instruments, have successfully learned to play.

you could probably learn an instrument at any age but you need to have experience to play in school bands, for example. I know that the last age our school recommends starting to play a new instrument is gr.10 so that you have some experience to play in the band (which is for all ages). It's a little hard to explain but after high school starts they don't tend to spend as much time explaining things to you because they expect you to know certain things. Private lessons would be good to start off with.

it's never too late to learn an instrument. im 15 too, and i have switched instruments several times, and just learned to play tenor sax last summer. i would suggest learning clarinet, thats wut i started on. you will catch on fast. one of my friends just started playing clarinet in band last year and she's doing great. hope that helps!

just adding, private lessons would be good, but if there's a reason u couldnt take them, the standard of excellence books are really nice to use ;-)

learn clarinet. i'm a freshmen and have been playing clarinet since i was in 4th grade. i'm now in a very adanced class with seiors. if you learn clarinet you'll be able top easily adapt to tenor sax, its the same thing only in sax form and in the same key. you can then learn any other sax, oboe, basoon, the possibilities are endless. hope that helps

Even if you don't start out on Clarinet you can play any reed instrumet but it will be harder to learn how to control the reed. But remember this you also half to conrtol the reed with a clarinet too. I play flute and oboe. I started Flute fist.

I think everyone here is a little biased to be telling you which instrument to start on. Although I started on flute... Every instrument has its advantages and disadvantages. I guess your best bet is to just pick which one appeals the most to you. You may want to consider what people you know play... in case you need help. Other than that, I guess you just have to pick... Flute was a random choice for me, and now I couldn't be happier with anything else...
