i learned tenor sax last year to be in my skool's jazz band, but when it comes to improv, i have no idea wut im doing. my teacher only made me improv 1 time all year at the very end, but i wish he had made me play more. all this improv stuff is over my head and i dont understand it. if any of you could please help me out and maybe explain some concepts, i would love it. thanks!

Improv is an art in and of itself. The main thing that you need to do right off the bat is master your scales, both major and minor, I know they are boring and tedious, but that practice will pay off down the road. After you have your scales under your fingers, have someone sit down with you and explain the chord symbols, that way when you see a D- G7 C You'll know that it's a ii-V-I in the key of C and you can just play your c major scale over all three chords! After youn can get a grip on the chord symbols, sit down with a recording or band in a box and just play something simple on each bar, like the first three notes of the scale. It'll sound simple, and hokey, but at least you'll be playing the changes. Listen to the song you are trying to improv over, get a recording and listen to what the sax player does on the solos. Another good thing that helped me out alot was Jamey Abersold's Major and Minor book, you can get it through the net. It just plays major and minor keys over and over again to get you familiar with the sounds and scales. I know this was all over the place, but I hope it helps abit. Don't give up! Ripping out a killer solo on a stage in front of a few thousand people is worth every minute of woodshedding!
