 Really flat oboe
Author: Flutey

I just got a new reed (I don't make my own, I'm only a freshman in HS) and it is almost a half-step flat when my mouth is at its tightest. Can anyone tell me how to get rid of the flatness?

Ok first of all, your mouth should never be "tight" on the reed period. Never bite down to bring the pitch up. If you're not making your own reeds, does that mean you're playing on reeds bought from the store? If so, what kind? What I would recommend you do is find a professional who makes his own reeds and buy from him. Storebought reeds have serious limitations that most people outgrow within only a month or two of playing oboe. There are lots of people out there who make reeds you can buy that are better than what you find in a music store. Looking online would be a great place to start.

If you are playing on a reed that someone has made for you, then the only way it could be flat would be a) poor craftmanship on the reed and/or b) not enough breath support.

make sure the reed is pushed in as far as it can go, then pull out if it is sharp until it is in tune.

Have ur teacher trim the end of the reed, mine does it to mine all the time. It makes it shorter, thus making it sharper. They'll have to shave the reed a little because it'll cut off most of the tip.
