Although I would suggest as a clarinetist for you to stay on the clarinet, learning the sax will be easy. I started to learn it and most of the fingerings are the same. The fingerings are the same as a clarinet's upper octave. The finger keys are also close. There are just a few different. The hardest part will probably be scales, the altissimo notes, and the pinky keys. These aren't that hard either. Hope I was a help!

I played clarinet for the first time last year in 7th, and got a sax, and it's been really easy for me to learn. The sax, I think, is easier to learn than the clarinet.

the SAX...try it, you'll love it!

I was in your position there too, I just got into 8th grade and now I'm learning sax, as well as still sticking with clarinet. The fingerings are nearly the same.

The Sax will definatly be easier tonewise. The Sax can have a rougher sound while the Clarinet should have a darker and nicer tone. You will find the high notes a lot easier to play on the Sax than the clarinet. A major diffrence between the two is the weight. You will probably have a sore shoulder after you practice for a long time (if you play the tenor anyways.)

i found it really easy to switch from the clarinet to the sax. however, i play tenor and i don't know whether the alto is easier, bearing in mind that the fingerings are the same, and you just require bigger lungs to play the tenor. Hope you're successful

I started the clarinet in the 6th grade a year later than everyone else. Then in the 2nd to last week of 7th grade I started playing sax. All the upper register is the same. i believe sax is easier than clarinet because you do not have to cover any holes on sax. I would recommend tenor sax because clarinet and tenor sax are both B flat instruments. Good Luck

I wouldn't recommend it. The Sax and the Clarinet, even though they both use a reed, are completely different instruments with completely different fingerings. After two years of clarinet, I'd stick with it unless you really don't sound good with it.

You can sound jazzy with a clarinet, in fact, the first time I heard a clarinetist sounding jazzy I thought it was a sax! LOL!

hey, I am doing the exact thing you are. Although I am switching, I will stay with the clarinet in concert band and play the sax (tenor) in jazz band. Everyone except that ignorant Frosty you have gotten a reply from, and my teacher and many musicians I have talked to, have told me that it is one of the most easy switches you can make. I beleive that the Frosty person is probably a clarinet lover, and doesn't beleive in any other instrument. It will be easy, but stay with the clarinet also, it will make you better musically.
