I have a suggestion for people who play the clarinet or flute. Learn how to play other instruments. Because you don't what to play them for about 17 years(and become a good clairinetist/flutist) then try to join a orchestra/band they have to many. I mean their good choices. But I started out with clarinet then flute. My parents then when I was 12 told me to take up bassoon and oboe just in case. Now 9 years later I still thank them. So really think hard when you choose the clairinet or flute. That is all.

you're right that these are more common instryments, but it just means that you have to work that much harder to get in. I wouldn't discourage playing flute or clarinet, but encourage to try out other instruments before really deciding which one to play.
