Trilling high D to B flat below
Author: Rick Johnson

I am playing a piece in orchestra which calls for the 1st Clarinet to trill from high D (above the staff) to B flat a third below the D. We have tried all kinds of different fingerings and haven't come up with anything really acceptable. Can anyone give me any tips? Thanks

OK, I guess I would properly refer to it as a tremolo. Anyway, does anyone have a good fingering for it?

I haven't got my clarinet with me so I can't test this. Since the Bb is in the clarion / clarino register, you'll want a fingering for the D that is in the same register, otherwise you'll have to cross the break into the Altissimo register. You can't tremolo easily across a break. Could you use the fingering with Register Key, Left thumb and G# key?

Assisting with the embouchure, you can finger high D as throat G (perhaps - but not necessarily - adding the register key).

the only one that i can think of that might give you a trill, but it'll take some time to get it would be to play.....Bb as Register, thumb, 1, 2 and the side key, side 4...and then to play D as register, thumb, g# key and s4...try that at first it'll be slow but then it'll be a llot easier...i know how you feel i had to play a piece which some how had a tril from middle F# to G#(in the staff) and then notes as high as high C...the c the octave higher than the c that's register thumb pain is the ass
