 Bb marching flute
Author: alison

I've been given a wooden Bb marching flute that has six holes, five keys (Dsharp, short F, Gsharp, short C(!) and one at the back that i just can't figure out at all) and a lovely sound for the first octave (although above that it gets a bit whistly)... Can anyone help with fingering??? (std flute fingering is not far off but just what is that back key for?)

If this was a simple flute in the key of D, I think it would be a Bb key. You'd cover holes 1 & 2 with the left hand (A fingering), and add the open key to get Bb. Since your flute is in the key of Bb, you need to transpose to figure out what note this is equivalent to. There's a fingering chart on the following web page that might help you figure out the fingering for your flute - just transpose the notes.

thanks bill and amanda for the swift replies...
i tried to make the Bb (my Bb) config and it worked a treat(covering the first two holes then using the mysterious back key)... as for the fingering chart, it's just what i need. i've got half way through the second octave and give or take one or two notes that differ (but i've worked those out anyway) all i'm lacking now is the lip!!
Bravo!!
