 buying an oboe

i was wondering if any of you could help me. im looking for an oboe for around $2000, wood, full or close to full conservatory system. what are some models i should look at, like fox, or something. and would it be worth while to check out the yamahas, selmers, and buffets? as i know their oboes arent at as high of a level as say their saxophones or clarinets. i'm a junior in high school and i would like to have an oboe to last me through high school and college, as i plan to major in music in college. I currently use an old plastic armstrong oboe from the school...which suprisingly has a full conserv. system, but is in pretty bad condition, and i would like to have a good condition wood oboe to call my own. thanks ahead of time

Oboes are kind of hard to find in my area. If this is true for you as well it probably is best to compromise the brands and models. Some are better than others, but the sound quality is mostly in how you play. Pick any name brand or model (off brands can be harder to resale). At your level, you probably shouldn't purchase any less than an intermediate. Student oboes won't take well to third octave notes. When I buy an oboe, I look for a third octave key and a left F key. Automatic and independent second octaves keys are nice, but aren't necessary.

Are you going march your oboe or play it outdoors? If so, you may want a plastic one. Mind you, plastic oboes drop severely in price after being purchased. Otherwise, buy wood. Do not listen or ask salesmen about oboes. Their knowledge on oboes is surprisingly limited if not plain inaccurate.

Ebay is good place to price shop second hand oboes. I've never purchased from ebay, but I've looked through their prices and they are very, very low.

I hope that helps. If not email me. I apologize for any errors.

I haven't heard anything good about Selmer oboes. Fox, Yamaha, Buffet should be possibilities, as well as used oboes by Loree, Marigaux, or Rigoutat. Some should be in your price range. Laubins are wonderful, but may be out of your price range, even used. It's important to audition any prospective intrument purchase carefully, you're the one who will have to play it. Best of Luck.

Ok, Go to a place called the Woodwind and the Brasswind(wwandbw.com) and ask for their woodwind catelog browse their website you can find exactly what you are looking for at half the price of the local music shops DEFINATELY. Larilee are good oboes, and Selmer makes good ones too, as well as Buffet, they are all good oboes. But if you can go Loree I highly suggest Loree, or even Bulgheroni they are like the next step down if now paralell

Beth,
It really depends on your location. If there are any local music stores that discount on oboes (like here in Tucson, you can get an oboe for $1275 instead of $1800). If you want a used oboe I would suggest looking at eBay, although I can't tell you if they're dependable or not.:)

A standard Patricola is the best buy at that price...$1,999, wood...almost full conservatory. And a very good professional sound.
