I've been playing the flute for five years and I'm in my high school band. Many people around me have open hole flutes. I think that they're kinda neat. But I don't really know the difference between a closed and an open hole flute. What's better about an open hole flute? And how much do they cost? Someone please help!

Open hole flutes have a hole where you place your fingers, instead of them using pads to cover the holes up your fingers now have to do the job.
There are many benefits, but also downsides. Open holes allow you to achieve a better tone quality, and to produce slighter wavers in the note pitch. They are also better for playing folk music. However you need very precise finger positioning to play.
They are commonly available, and most flutes charge no extra for open holes. Most shops stock open hole flutes.

The term "open hole flute" is also used to mean a flute with pads, the same as a closed hole flute, but with a hole in each pad which is covered by the fingers. I don't know much about flutes so I can't tell you what the advantages and disadvantages would be.

An "open hole" flute is actually called a "French Model" flute. Closed hole is "plateau model". The french model flutes do reguire better hand position but, its not that much more difficult. The tone and quality of the note also sounds better. Many people think it doesnt sound as muffled as plateau models. But in all, it should be your choice.

I don't think that an open hole flute is any better or worse than a closed hole flute. If you do you homework and look up the history of the flute you will see the the leading company of flute makes way back when decided to try open hole flute to see if there was a difference. Thy found that there wasent. Just b/c they were the top flute makers everyone else played alonge and it became the standard. Some advantages are being able to play quarter tones. which are really neat in Chinese music and Flok music. If you need more info email me at kingst@frontiernet.net

well, my instructor told me that you can get a better tone once you play an open hole flute well. also, you can get these things (or maybe they come with, not sure) to put in the holes so that you can take them out one at a time and adjust slowly. well that's all i know, maybe it was slightly helpful.
