Cheap clarinet - Quality mouth piece?
Author: Ted W.

I just got a clarinet at the thrift store. It cost $30 and seems to be in great working order. It's a student model - Boehm style, plastic body with nickle plated keys. I don't play (yet) but with some determination I imagine Ill be able to play a few simple tunes soon. My question is, would it be worth while / expense to replace the mouth piece with a higher quality one. If so, I could use some recomendations.

Thanks much, Ted W.

It would definitely be worth paying more than you paid for the clarinet to buy a decent mouthpiece. A quality moutpiece makes more difference to the sound than a quality clarinet. I recommend the Vandoren B45 as a middle-of-the-road (not too open, not too closed) mouthpiece which should keep you going for many years if you look after it carefully. Good luck with your playing.

The mouthpiece is very important. I agree with the recommendation of getting a Vandoren B45.

I also suggest that you get the clarinet checked out. Used instruments may need a few new pads or adjustments that you wouldn't spot but could cause difficulties in playing.

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to follow both suggestions. Got another question though. Is it supposed to be so hard to blow through? Or will the mouth piece and new cane fix that. I'll stop by Old Town School for the (tune up?) and a couple of beginners books. I just want to know if I get the mouth piece and I still have to blow with such force, Is that just how it works or do I just need practice? Thanks again

Ted W.
