I'm playing piccolo (along with a handful of other instruments) for a musical at school, but I've been having some trouble with reaching first-octave notes on the piccolo. Second-octave and higher notes work relatively well for me, but my limit seems to be the first-octave A; anything below that either comes out an octave too high, or as a useless "breathy" sort of sound, if I loosen my embouchure. Any tips?

check the plug at the top to see if its air tight or take it in to a nearby music shop or see if your teacher has a better piccolo.

Addendum - I can play flute passably well, and get both fundamental octaves doing so. Just felt like making that sidenote. ^_^
In case anyone's curious, the musical's "Crazy For You", and I'm playing the first reed book, which consists of (I think) piccolo, flute, Bb clarinet, oboe, and ocarina. That reminds me ... in addition to my first question, anyone know where I could find a ocarina fingering chart, assuming I can find an ocarina somehow? ^_^ The key's listed on the part, so I can transpose if necessary.

i am playing a hand full of instr. at school to i play the piccolo as well.all you have to do is losen you embouchure.
if you still have problems get the horn checked.
