 Bassoon Intonation
Author: Kenny E

I have been playing bassoon for about 8 months now and I am still having problems hitting notes above A-flat(5th line on bass clef). Sometimes I can get it and sometimes I can't. It might be due to my tight embouchure in playing the oboe and alto sax. I also have a problem with staying in tune because my pitch varies. Is there anything I can do Please help because I want to get good at this instrument just like my other two. I appreciate any other tips on playing also.

Thanks very much,

Kenny E

Make sure that you are covering the hole , first finger , left hand. You have to half hole the Gand sometime the A-flat then make sure you have that first tone hole covered.

Your intonation problems might be result of the various instruments you are playing. Are you a student, or a professional learning to double on various instruments. If a student - the bassoon is a tough beast to tangle with by itself let alone with two other instruments - one being another double reed. Students that I teach, I suggest they focus on the bassonn exclusively for a while until they are comfortable with the instrument, embouchure and intonation quirks. Then pick up the others again. If you're a professional - you have to be "in tune" (ha ha) with what you need to do on the various horns. The double reeds are very persnickety. Embouchure is very important and the slight variances you make can make a hugh difference in intonation and tone. Practice long tones at varying dynamic levels and octave jumps agan in long tone matching pitch. You might also practice with a tuner and work on octaves (ex. low F High F low CF and go up the scale. Hope this helps its hard to diagnose without actually watching/hearing you play.

I will be a high school junior next year. I have been playing oboe for 4 years, alto sax for 2 years, piano for 6 months, and basson for only 8 months. I hope to become a professional one day (in addition to a computer analyst).
What are the flick keys for the left hand thumb and how do you use them? Will these help?

Above g sharp you have to use the speaker(flick} keys. These are to be used for a,b flat,b, and c. Americans dont bother too much because their reeds favour higher harmonics but all of us over in europe have to use the keys with our reeds. Please e-mail me if you are still having problems or I have misunderstood. Good luck Brian.
