I just bought a clarinet on E-Bay for my daughter's use in school. (I know, shame on me for not doing my research first, but time was short). It hasn't arrived yet, but it's a Yamaha YCL-23 in virtually new condition.
My local music store warns me that this clarinet could have different fingerings because it was made in Japan. I wonder about this, especially since this guy really wants to sell me one of his clarinets. Anybody know if this is true? Do all Bb clarinets have the same fingering?
Many thanks,

There are two different fingering systems for clarinets. The
standard one is called Boehm System and is used throughout
the world.
The other is called Albert System or Oehler System. It is the standard in Germany and Austria and is rare everywhere else.
As far as I know, all Yamaha clarinets use the
Boehm system and you should have no problems.
Any clarinettist will be able to tell by looking at
the clarinet when it arrives which system it uses, as
the two types look quite different. It is difficult to
describe the differences here. I think the following
will help you distinguish:
Down the front of the clarinet is a row of 6 holes. In the Boehm system, five of these should have a metal ring around them. The one that doesn't is the third one, counting from
the top. In the Albert system, only four of the holes will have rings around them, the third and fourth holes being
without rings.

All current Yamaha clarinets listed on the www.yamaha.com website use the standard Boehm system of fingering. The
YCL-23 is not listed here as it is not a current model.
Another Yamaha page lists the YCL-23N as a model made in
1969-1971 made of composition (that is, plastic) with nickel-plated keys. This is shown as Boehm system.
I'd say it is 99% certain that you won't have a problem.

Stay away from this instrument retail store. Your daughter will enjoy the instrument and good luck. I teach the clarinet and use a Yamaha clarinet and saxophone.

I used a Yamaha clarinet that was made in Japan when I first started in grade 6, and I had no problem. I used it all through grade 7 too with no problem. That place you're talking about doesn't really know what they're talking about...

My husband bought me a clarinet from e-bay. It came from a factory in India. It is a Bb clarinet. Now I have it I have been looking at other ones on the internet and noticed the keys are different. The top three holes don't have metal rings around them. After the three holes at the bottom of the clarinet they are two stinking out keys, but on other ones I have noticed they are four. Does this sound like a standard Bb clarinet?
Thanks Amy
