Does anyone know what key alto flute is in? I know it is not Eb (i think it is Ab but not sure). Bass flute is in the key of C (-12) and I don't think it is key of Db...:)

I thought it was something like that, however- I wasn't sure. i am not very good at determining such things! My friend and I in flute choir spent a long time puzzling over that.

The most common are in G, but you occasionaly find one in F (Then again, you also occasionally find a piccolo in the key of A or Db.)

Someone's probably got there before me, but no matter. The alto flute is pitched in G. It sounds a perfect 4th lower than the normal concert flute.

All current makers of alto flutes are pitched in G, a perfect 4th below the concert flute. With that assumption, always transpose up a perfect 4th from concert pitch and you'll be safe. Theobald Boehm made his altos at this pitch as it was more mechanically reliable than ones pitched in F (a perfect 5th below). Possibly due to softer metals at that time?

Alto flutes are a concert C instrument which are able to reach G below middle C.
