Will learning trombone kill my flute playing?
Author: Lindsay

I'm in show choir band, and I play the flute and piccolo... I'm really involved with flute and picc., and I'm practicing all kinds of stuff for All State and various honor band auditions. The choir director wants me to play trombone for the songs that don't have a flute part since I told her a while ago I'd be willing to try another instrument and they DESPERATELY need a trombone player.
So what I'm wondering is, if I keep practicing my flute and piccolo, if trombone will hurt my playing at all.

as far as i know it shouldnt....ive heard that learning a new instrument may actually make you improve on your starting instrument

That's completely wrong.

Yes, a trombone embouchure will wreck your flute embouchure. But it's not completely un-doable. I did the same thing a few years ago, and while neither my flute nor my trombone embouchures were perfect at the same time, I managed to be proficient on both. So go for it. But if you're REALLY serious about your flute playing, I would recommend laying off on the trombone before auditions and competitions when you're playing the flute. Good luck!

i agree with Sam totally! playing the trombone means u have to buzz with your lips. buzzing your lips will render your flute embrochure and worst of all piccolo embrochure insensitve; severely damaging your flute/piccolo embrochure.
