My daughter has been playing the oboe for about 8 months and is progressing quite well, but she is bothered by headaches and she seems to literally over heat when playing.. I can't believe this is normal any suggestions to help would be gratefully received as its putting her off!

I don't play oboe, but I've heard there is quite a lot of back-pressure that builds up because of the very small opening for the air to pass through. You also have to remember to exhale to rid yoursfelf of any stale air in your lungs. This is quite a common problem for oboe players, from what I hear.

Try asking her teacher, she may be using the wrong technique or something that would cause her headache.

What Fernando said was absolutely correct. Saying that the oboe is the most difficult instrument ever is not entirely correct but it is more difficult to start off with compared to other instruments. The main reason is the breathing technique. Try looking for the Hinke method book and learn it. It will definitely help ease the headaches. Once she gets hold of the idea of breathing it will be sort of a big help to her. Good luck!

i've been playing oboe for about... less than a year ( haha sorry that's a poor estimation) and i had the same problem. Letting out the air because of back up is very smart... and... don't play so strongly, it doesn't need that much air anyway. You can put less air through it ( but still support the notes!)

i hope i helped ,

I simply agree with the rest of the ppl who have replied to your post. It is most probably the use of wrong breathing technique. Maybe she's not relaxing enough? Sometimes being too tense in muscles would result to headaches. I used to get headaches and dizzy spells after playing the oboe when i first start. It stopped afetr i was told that the breathing technique used was wrong. It would sure be good if you could check with her teacher. =)
