 What's the best way to clean a bassoon bocal?

ive only played a basson for about 2 weeks before i gave up but have you tried water? i know the cork might get wet but put some grease on it and it *should* protect it. jus an idea though...

Well... there is none. Some people sell bocal brushes which are, in my opinion next to useless. I used to blast high pressure water through mine, and that usually succeeded quite well. However, you must remember that most (like 99.9%) of that guck in there is nothing but water formed by condensation. Due to the fact that bocals are nickel or silver plated, they very rarely require cleaning. Remember, however, that this is NOT true for the bassoon itself. Water can cause severe damage to a bassoon, particularly to hte boot joint. Clean it after each use.

Oh, I forgot. The whisper key hole in the bocal is the beginning of a short shaft that penetrates into the centre of the bocal. Be very careful with those bocal brushes as the shaft is very thin.

I use pipe cleaners to do mine with a bit of water. You can get tapered ones that are ideal. Hope this helps.
