I want to learn to play the saxaphone, can anyone tell me what is the best choice of saxaphone to purchase. I am dedicated at the adevnture i am about to do, so i need to find a decend saxaphone.

I think he means brand, not size. Yamaha makes the best student horns, although they generally cost a bit more. But it's worth it.

It is possible this person meant a particular brand but very unlikely due to the fact they used the phrase "what is the best choice" in their statement.More than likely they want to know what size of saxaphone to begin on.

You are probably right Larry on that one.Or it is possible that they are just not sure on either the size or brand altogether.Either way this individual would need to be more specific on the matter.No disrespect to you Torus, but also we need to be certain if the individual is truly of the male gender or perhaps the female gender.We cant always assume.Again, no disrespect to you Torus.I am sure you know a little about saxaphones and will continue to learn and increase your knowledge in the future.

My friends, "what is the best choice" is too ambiguous a statement for us to really know what he meant. However if you look at his last sentence, he says, "I need to find a decent saxophone." Is it more likely that he would use the word "decent" to differentiate between sizes or brands? 9 times out of 10, that means brands. But at least this way he'll know both brand and size, and let's leave it at that.
And Joseph, the phrase "I am sure you know a little about saxaphones and will continue to learn and increase your knowledge in the future" if not disrespectful, is certainly belittling. My advice, learn to spell saxophone before you start derogating the knowledge of people about whom you obviously know nothing.
Also, "he" is the default neutral gender in English, so I have no reservation about using that word until coldhouse feels it necessary to clarify his sex.

Wow... this is a music forum, where you give your advice to the person asking the question, not one to point out anything negative about any other people trying to help. It was disrespectful to Torus to say things like that, and Torus has been an active user on this site ever since I found it. This is the first post I've seen Joseph reply in, as well as Larry, now I don't just every post, but I know that he knows what he's talking about, and he's been hear a lot longer. And you can't say you would know more because teachers and real musicians wouldn't assume they were better than any one else. Now let's just stick to the question being asked, and enough of the nonsense. Now we don't know what coldhouse was asking about-brand or type of sax. Well then we should give our advice on both. I would suggest Alto or Tenor, preferably alto, it's usually what most start on, and than switch to one of the other saxes. As for brand, Yahamas are great as student models, as Torus said, if you wanted to really pursue this goal and wanted to play on something great, I would say a professional Cannonball... they're just what I like, I don't know what anyone else thinks, but I think they're great saxophones, and my sax teachers have cannonballs too. Although, the only bad thing is that they're quite expensive... But the black nickel ones are absolutely beautiful. Hope this helps.

i hope people wont start jumping down my throat, but i'd like to answer the question and not get into a squabble. you're best bet would be alto, it is easy to start on. depending on your size and age, if you are a small person alto woud be easy for your size, if you are taller, tenor would be also a valid choice because you can hold it much easier. go to your local music shop and see the isntruments to check out what you like. if you want rent one and then rent the other for a month and see how you like them. once you know one saxophone, the fingerings are all the same for any other sax. if you start with alto, you can also play the tenor, and also soprano or baritone sax. as for brands, yamaha, vito, jupiter, selmer, S&B are all good brands. play test any and every sax you plan to purchase. it can be a Selmer or Yamaha, but been treated poorly and hence play poorly and give a poor tone. if you know anyone who plays a sax, ask them to come along with you while you pick out your first sax. they an play test to make sure it works perfectly, and can give a good tone. my advice to you is to get a good method book and a private instructor, they can get you on the right track, and help you avoid any bad habits that can develope. if you are still in school, join the school band, the band teacher is trained to helpy ou play your instrument. they can also help you. hope this helps.

Torus raises a valid arguement. Joseph Williams really did lash out with the phrase "I am sure you know a little about saxaphones and will continue to learn and increase your knowledge in the future." That is quite a blast to anyone - to say the least, and I don't blame Torus for retaliating. There was no form of arrogance or unkindness in this topic, and why Larry says so is beyond anyone's view.
Nothing to do with music but rather common sense and courtesy in this case.

My goodness, a whole lotta bickering going on...some folks must just have too much time on their hands! Back to saxaphones..Thanks to those that provided advice, my son is in a similar situation, wants to start to play the alto sax, however, I don't play, nor do I know anyone that does, so I was hoping someone could please offer advice as to the quality of the following brands of alto sax? Yamaha YAS 23, Veto, Brass Lacquer Monique Pro, Selmer Bundy II, Jupiter, Weimar, Reynolds, Martin, Buescher. If you all would be so kind as to limit your responses to the criteria of quality, durability, and price it would be much appreciated.
