I just got my new oboe that has a thrid oactave key. I was wondering if anyone knew any sites that have the fingerings for the use of the third octave, or any tips for using it.
Also in a Previous post I read Haubois, made a comment in a post about oboe resistance. He/she (sorry) said how many new oboe players get "faint syndrome" (I like that). Now I was trying to figure this out, only because I play many different instruments, including the flute and Bari sax, I know you need to pump a lot of air through those puppies, and so when I started oboe I did the same by taking in tons of air. I heard another oboe player saying about taking in too much air and I wondered what thats all about? I have done, and continue to do a lot of swimming helping my breath support and I can steadily blow air through my oboe for a long period of time... is this not good practice?

it is good practise, although you really have to learn how to systematically breath out as well! the scientific explanation to it is the fact that carbon dioxide which is not breath out immediately after breathing in will cause you to simply lack air and have a sudden black out situation. playing the oboe is not a natural act of the body, and because it is an oboe the problems that exist will be a bit more than the other instruments that you also play. do you have the hinke method? you are right on taking a good deep breath before playing, but what happens later also counts. taking less breath and playing less later is not the correct concept. You wont have the preparation to get the support, air speed and focus needed to play. just try to think of it. the air column and small aperture of the oboe when compared to an instrument like a bari sax! (actually the bari sax and the flute requires as much support and focus as the oboe, the difference is the aperture and the physical characteristics of the oboe.)

Ya that makes sense. Wish I could make playing the oboe part of the body.. maybe I shall invest in science...
Here is the list of instruments I play
Piccolo
Flute
oboe
Bassoon
Clarinets (Eb Soprano- Bb Bass)
Saxes (Bb Soprano - Eb Bari)
Bb Trumpet (I play less now)
Those are the wind intruments I play so i know about taking in a lot of air, and I think my swimming has helped me out. As for the hinke method, I'm afraid I don't know what you are refering to, sorry.

the concept behind breathing is considered to be the same in all wind instruments, too bad to be good in oboe, there are some minor differences which you will have to find out for yourselve through lots of practise, which in terms if not corrected now might cause severe problems later. If you want to be good on oboe (i mean, REALLY VERY VERY GOOD) you might as well spend more time on it and better yet only it, i am not doubting your abilities as a wind player but more focus will help you play better, definitely. A very good mind set is needed to be able to play so many instruments, but if i were you i would rather stick to one type which i really love and make it as best as possible. good luck.
