I am looking into buying an intermediate level flute for my daughter. I would like to spend around $1000-$1500 total. Her teacher has recommended several brands and different features but easily changes her mind on which she would choose based on who she is talking to at the time. I need advice as soon as possible. Some of the brands recommended have been Pearl and Dean-Yang. Some features that at one point she said were vital and now says are not include- the donut(Cfacilitator) and split e mechanism. I know only what the teacher tells me so would like any advice you many have.

Try the Pearl because the split E comes standard on all of them.. they are a little bit on the sharp side.. A-442.. but you get more than you pay for on a Pearl flute. It's a matter of opinion.. but I don't think that Armstrong is a good flute. If your daughter wants to go futher on Flute Pearl is a better brand.. I play on a professional Pearl flute and I haven't had any issues with it.. Emerson's are good too I used to have a intermediate Emerson.. but I found it a little more complex as far as tone was concerned.. With my Pearl, my tone is absolutely beautiful, with no effort at all.. Try to go to some music stores that has a flute specialist and let your daughter play on some that she feels comfortable with.. I hope this helps.

It really depends on the person. I recently got an intermidiate level flute, an open-hole Gemeinhardt. That brand works really well for me. A solid silver headpiece is a good idea too. You can opt for solid silver body/foot or silver plated. My tone and playing really improved with a solid silver head and silver plated body/foot, so it's a worthwhile investment. I recommend bringing your daughter to a store to let her try out different flutes. I did, and found out that Gemeinhardt works better for me than Yamaha or Jupiter. I've heard Pearl is a good brand, but my experience with Armstrong have not been good. My band director and section leader both agree that they're not very good. As far as features, I have a B-foot with a gizmo key and open holed (French model). The B-foot extends your range and the open holes improve tone. Your daughter will have to have proper hand position to cover the holes, but until then she can use corks. The gizmo key helps third-octave C (5th ledger line above the staff) The split e just helps the tone of the high E and is useful but not necessary. http://www.fluteworld.com/Merchant/glossary.htm is a helpful website when it comes to deciding features.

I have played a Gemeinhardt SP2 (silver plated) flute for about 10 years now, right from when I first started to learn the flute. I love it to bits, the sound is beautiful, clear, crisp.
Gemeinhardt's have their own special full tone. When I was playing in Orchestra's my conductor always chose me to play some of the solo parts as he enjoyed my flute's tone so much.
I heartly recomend the Gemeinhardt range of flutes.

i recently(this summer) bought a sonare flute...i dont kno hwo much it was(my parents bought it for me for my birthday) but i agree with the previous post, that she should try out flutes, because some flutesdoont "work" as well as others do

I play the Flute. My flute used to be my sister's, but she wanted to play piano instead and wanted to play the flute, so it's mine now! Before, buying the flute she rented it from City Music Center. I wish I could help by saying what brand Flute I play, but honestly, I don't know! It does say Armstrong on my case and this Flute lasted for ten years and is still working. Hope you find the right brand!
