well im a freshman right now and i made it into the concert band(2nd band) im second chair....well we dont have an oboe (first band took them all) and one of the pieces we are playing has an oboe solo... and the director gave it to me(clarinet) to play on clarinet.. i dont have a problem actually learning it and playing it ...but ive never had a solo before, and i dont really understand if there is a certian technique to playing a solo to make it sound good but also be able to hear it over the rest of the people playing.... any advise?

You're doing pretty good if you've got second chair. As good as your doing, people know that you can play the notes. What you have to show them is that you can play music. If the music is spiffy and upbeat think happy thoughts and express them w/ the music but if its slow and sad, express saddness you may feel. Put your heart and soul into it and you'll do fine. Hey, I'm a first chair clarinettist form Belgium. If they can't hear you, they'll just have to play quieter so that you don't have to overblow... And just stay calm and play it as you would like it to sound...

use a tuner like actually play with one during the competition and play louder then usual

Well, I'm only in sixth grade! So you probably know more than me! I play the flute. I made it into G'n'T, and have been in two trios, one in my first year and one in my second year. I was very nervous for all three! What helped me, was to practice and instead of looking at the audience, just look at your music and stand, imagine they aren't there! Good luck and congrgulations!

hey! i haven't done a solo yet, but one of my friends have. She's a really shy girl but she absolutely excels. basically, your conductor (if (s)he's a good one) will yell at the other instruments if they play too loudly and you're playing at the dynamic level written. if (s)he doesn't, well then you can only play louder. good luck!

Just pretend you are playing with the other clarinets. Keep your mind on the music, not the people watching.
