 Soprano Sax

I have been played B-flat clarinet and alto sax for years and just recently started playing soprano sax. I am finding the D6 and above register on the soprano more difficult than on an alto (I am having to really tighten my embouchure and squeeze on the mouthpiece more than I expected). Is this one of the idiosyncrasies of the instrument that I will get used to with more playing time?

Yes, you will be able to play soprano, just like you learned how to play the alto a few years ago.Anything is possible with desire and practice, practice, practice.

yes. you'll find that the soprano with it's small mouthpiece, your embouchure will have to be very small. it's one of those you have to live with and learnt o adapt. eventually that D with get out much easier and cleaner. hope this helps.

Sax Player in Alabama

I've been playing Tenor years (and years) and have just bought a Soprano and I have the same problem. I thought it might be the mouthpiece Yanagisawa metal 7. But I think it just takes some hard work and perserverance.

Best of Luck

Hmm, I think it's an intermediate idiosyncracy, meaning that yes, you may have to squeeze hard to get the note to voice, but just for awhile. In no time at all, you'll be able to comfortably play soprano. I do recommend practicing it along with your alto, as it helps your mouth cleanly separate the two different embouchures, otherwise it may want to adjust to one and forget the others.
