Tip of oboe reed closing up
Author: Debbie
Date:   2001-04-28 14:03

I have been buying medium strength oboe reeds and after playing for awhile, the tip seems to want to close to a point that I get no sound or a very weak sound. I thought it was the brand I was buying, but now I've tried several and it continues to happen. Any suggestions???

Hey Debbie. If by medium strength oboe reeds do you mean the kind you buy at the music store? If you do then I would say quality of the reeds you're buying is probably your biggest enemy. Truthfully I can say that I have NEVER found a brand of mass-produced music store reed that plays worth a hoot. A properly shaved reed shouldn't be closing up unless there is some sort of embourcure problem. If you're placing too much pressure on the reed than that can eventually cause it to close up, even with the best made reeds. It's analogous to trying to sing with someone strangling you. If you are playing on store-bought reeds I would start thinking about trying to find an oboist who makes his own and buying them from him/her.

I completely agree with Aaron, don't buy store bought reeds. To fix the problem, just periodically gently squeeze the sides of the reeds together near the tip (make sure the reed is moist and soft), so that it opens up.

First, you will never find ANY good, worthwhile reeds that are store bought. You might want to start considering making your own, or finding someone that makes them handmade. Secondly, you might just be biting too hard on the reed. When you have a fairly soaked reed, use your thumb and forefinger and place it on the bottom of it, right about the cork. Then, push it slight to open it up. That will keep it open for a while. Just to mention again, if you are still on store bought reeds, you might wanna reconsider. :)

Yeah all you have to do is say "store bought reeds" to any oboist and you immediately get a lot of rolling eyes, cursing and gnashing of teeth. One wonders how those companies stay in business! Maybe because of bassoon reeds? Who knows?

Try not to take your reed from a hot to cold climate. Try to play were it is not to hot or cold.
