How different is the English Horn to play from the oboe. I have always played the oboe, but I was thinking of buying a used English Horn and trying to play it. Is it the type of thing you could teach yourself, or would some special instruction be needed? I've never even touched an English Horn.

The oboe and english horn have the exact same fingerings. so it would probably be easy.

I've also been lead to believe by my teacher that the embouchure is slightly easier - the C.A having a slightly larger and looser reed - and thus less resistance.

Hey Debbie. I'd recommend trying to borrow someone's English Horn if at all possible before committing to anything really expensive. As for differences between oboe and E.H., there really aren't that many in the feel of the two. The only thing is that you end up using more air in the E.H. simply because it's a bigger horn, but you don't really have to push any harder to get it to sound. A lot of E.H.'s I've played on tend to be a bit squirrelly up high compared to the oboe, but then again that could be just lack of familiarity =). At any rate good luck; I know it'll be fun getting addicted to playing those mellow low tones at every opportunity.
