You might want to take a look at the flutes on the www.music123.com web sits
http://www.music123.com
They have a rental/purchase program. Also, Woodwinds & Brasswinds has good prices.

Or check with a local music store for a used flute. If they are reputable, they'll help you find one that's in good condition.
Good luck.

Ask a band director. they can usually get flutes from music stores. i just bought my second flute, and my music techer got it from a store. Since i bought it through him (and I am his student) the price went down from around $2200 to $805. Which is, I must say, fantastic. But this is much more expensive than a beginning flute.
I payed about 500 for my first flute, and it is still functional today. besides accidents of my own (dropping it, etc) it has needed no repairs and has worked well for me for 6 years.
Good luck- if you find the right music store, right flute and the right person- you could probably get a pretty nice flute for your $300! But my advice is- if you buy from the classifieds, have an experienced flute player inspect it before you purchase it. i know alot of people who thought they were getting a good deal on a flute, when actually- it was junk. But you might make a find in the classifieds.
