Is there any tips besides fingerings, that can improve my tone. And are hand made reeds better than store bought reeds? Why? Do they last longer, and how can I make my store-bought reeds last longer

Kyle, store bought reeds are usually machine-made and have not been tested. They may even be made by non-oboe players. You can buy reeds through the mail that have been made by real oboe players which may be better than your store-bought reeds. You can find names of suppliers listed in the internet by searing under oboe reeds - to name a few (but you need to find what you like!): Jeanne, ROM, Patricia Marsh, etc. etc. There are many. The oboe reed has MUCH to do with your tone. Also, handmade reeds may last longer because you are enjoying them more, and not making unnecessary adjustments with your embouchure and blowing to make them sound good. They will last longer if you keep them in a reed case (not plastic tubes) that will protect the tips. Don't over-soak your reeds (just wet and place back in your case for a few minutes, and let them dry out completely after playing. Also, private instruction FROM AN OBOIST will ensure your embouchure and blowing technique is correct for that beautiful oboe tone!

A more refined reed makes a better tone. I've heard more experienced oboist say hand-made reeds are better, but I can use store bought reeds well. I don't know the difference because I have never had a reed that I made myself.

I just started the oboe. What does "embouchure" mean? Any tips for a new, but determined, oboist? Thanks!

Embouchure is how the reed is held in your mouth or how you blow into the reed.

It is best to get an experienced oboe teacher to help you becaus reed making is a complicated process. You need to have special materials to make reeds with. I am just now learning too.

The embosure is the most important factor in the tone of your oboe. one tip is playing like you are saying the letter 'o' this will give you a flowing round tone. it wil also improve vibratos.
