 difficult B3, C4 with piccolo
Author: Claudio

I have played the flute for almost 20 years and have no problems with pp high notes. I have just switched to the piccolo to match the needs of the orchestra where I am playing. After a couple of weeks' practice, I have no problems getting some reasonably soft (and well tuned) G3 or A3, but no such luck for higher notes (especially C4): I spit, I blow too much and no sound comes out. It's a disaster! I have tried to roll the piccolo in a little bit and that seems to work SLIGHTLY better. Any advice ? Thanks. Claudio

Your problems could be caused by the higher reverberation needed to make the piccolo sound. You just need to adjust and experiment to see what works best for you.

Besides practicing{which should stop the problem}, some piccolos were made with a scale that makes it virtually impossible to play B3 and above. Let an experienced piccoloist try out your piccolo amd get some feedback. Also, your headjoint may not be properly matched to your piccolo. Try these:

The trick is mostly to not use the little finger of your right hand.

I play flute and piccolo professionally. I worked with Emily Beynon, Vincent Cortvrient, Robert Dick, Andrew West, Pieter Wispelwey, Roberta Alexander and Lavinia Meijer.
