hi guys... just happened to thread upon some posts saying that oboists in tokyo kosei don't sound good. well have u guys heard of their cd New Sounds In Brass 2003? Probably one of their best cd released so far. i think its relatively rare.. u have to import from japan i guess. I've heard those recordings, and i can simply say that they are perhaps one of the best sounding bands i've ever heard. Dynamics wise i'd say i've never heard anything better. There is only one oboist in the orchestra, and if u wanna hear him play u can visit their official website (in japanese, click on the 9th link from the top on the left hand side navigation panel).

kosei is one of the best bands of the WORLD!
Their oboist sound good.. I have a recording of Philip's Sparke 'To a New Dawn'
His tone colour is really nice...

Umm, no Kathryn Greenbank or Richard Woodhams's tone color is nice. His sounds thin by comparison. Not that you can really tell from the sound files on their website what they actually sound like since it sounds like the equivalent of a 64 or lower bitrate mp3.
There's an excerpt of him playing the B minor solo from Swan Lake on the website. Try and find that one, I think it's the 1.7 MB one. The two main things I find absolutely gross about that is A) how wide the vibrato is up high and B) how often he pops that B-C# transition moving over the fingering break. Does that not annoy you? It sure does me. It's really bad on that last high B he hits. What is that, about a 25 cent variation both ways? There are other things too, but I don't want to nitpick.

i sure do like him.
tokyo kosei is also one of my favourite bands.
i have their philip sparke and claude t smith recordings.
awesome by tonality, sonority, and musicality.
maybe some intonation flaws here and there.
but the greatest orchestras in the world also perform with those little mishaps right?
all to the end its good music that counts. well i've learned not to complain so much. Haha.
Beware because it is not always the same oboist playing. They have quite a few freelance players.
Anyways i really like the oboist. Its kind of a personal preference. I love Holiiger, Klein, and Messiter but also loads of oboists that i do not know the names of.
Tokyo Kosei's performance of 'Dream in The Silent Night' arr. by Toshio Mashima is a must for the fans. The oboe solos are amazing!!!!!!
