Like just about everyone, I marched during MS and HS. It is the worst form of band, in my opinion.

Well, I think everyone here knows my opinion about marching band, but at the same time I don't necessarily want to disparage those who do enjoy it. I think really it's just a question of what you're trying to achieve with your instrument. If you like all the drills, the formations, the marking time, etc. then sure marching band is great. However, if your priority is making music, then perhaps marching band really isn't your scene.

Additionally, if you are one of the latter, realize that marching band doesn't just suffer from a lack of musicality; often it is detrimental to that band's ability to make music in any setting. Anyone who has been to band camp over the summer and the tried to play in the concert band after school starts knows this. All that focusing on playing show tunes leaves your band loud, unbalanced, and sharp. Usually this takes about a month or more of back-tracking to fix.

I play in a wind orchestra, we play concerts and we also march. I play sax and oboe. But I think in Italy it's a little different than in USA.

my BD will not let us go to a marching competiton if we lack musicality... music always comes first ... but our show is like 200(tempo)with over 100 sets

Where are u guys from?

I guess "musicality" is relative.

This was my first year of marching band. I play oboe, so I wasn't too happy. Now, after two and a half months, I can't even imagine not being in it. I march tenor sax, and in my band tenors have a reputation for being the slackers, goof offs, rebels, and all this other stuff. We're like our own family now, and I can't believe I really haven't known them that long. Out of all the sections we're the closest, even though we do goof off a lot. At last Thursday night's practice, it hit all of us how different next year was going to be, and how much we were going to miss the seniors. It feels like I've known them forever, and then they'll be gone just like that. Concert band is good, and I'm looking forward to it so I can play oboe again, but at the same time I never want marching season to end. Concert band does not give you the lifelong friendships and family a marching band does.

I think marching band is the best ever. I am the Bass Clarinet and Co-Clarinet section leader in the CCHS marhcing band in denver. We play an awsome show every year. We made finals at a marching compitetion we played at last saturday for the first time since 1993 and it was one of the best days of my life. I also think marching band improves my Wind Ensemble playing, because it teaches me that there is a difference between loud and intense. For instance the most intense part of the show is mezzo piano. In my opinion everyone should do it.

I think it has a lot to do with leadership. If your director isn't great, than its not half the fun. my director was with the Cadets, and he had a lot of his old band members come in and teach technique. one of them wrote our drill. It also has a lot to do with the band its self. if your not that enthusiastic about it, its gonna suck for ya.

I pity you. its all about the band. if you don't put forth the effort to get it done, and do your best, than you won't take anything from it. of course, you wouldn't be in it if you hadn't had better years and expeirences.
