I just started the bassoon and I know nothing is there any advice someone could give me.

My advice: Get a fingering chart, a teacher to guide you and possible get a bassoon recording. Watch out for intonation and pitching. Very trick on the bassoon.

I would urge you to get a private teacher. While you might prefer to pick up the "basics" yourself before getting a teacher, it is better to get proper instruction from the start. I taught myself to play and by the time I got a teacher I had to unlearn many bad playing habits and relearn proper ones. It would have been much easier if I had learned right in the first place. Also, if you will be playing on a school bassoon, the teacher will be able to make sure it is in acceptable playing condition. Good luck!

Congratulations on selecting the BEST instrument to play. I played the bassoon while in HS and am now taking it up again after a 30 year break! Kind of like riding a bike but not quite. That's why I'm at this site...to find a good fingering chart. I agree with the other advice given. Without professional instruction it will be hard to succeed as bassoon is a very difficult instrument to master. A source for good reeds is a must. Handmade ones rather than the Ricos or Vandorens are the best. Best of luck to you!
