 Practical written ranges
Author: Nick C.

What are the practical written ranges (i.e., what most competent high-school level players can deal with) of the E-flat alto sax, the B-flat tenor sax, and the flute? I'm doing some arranging work, and I don't want to find I've put in a note that's too hard for the player, too high or too low for the instrument.

The saxes cannot go below a written Bb (just below the 1st ledger line below the staff). However, notes below the written C are difficult to play. On the high side, notes above the 2nd or 3rd ledger line above the staff start to get pretty difficult.

For the flute, most high schoolers will only have a standard flute. That means that the lowest possible note is middle C (one ledger line below the staff). I think most of them should be able to play this note reasonably well. On the high side, I'm not sure but 4 ledger lines above the staff should be a reasonable expectation with the better high school players able to make the 5th ledger line plus one note.

I am a sophmore in High school, and my personal range is from middle c, to the Bb which is 5 leger lines above the staff, but i would say from the 2nd line g, to the g that is 4 leger lines above the staff would be a good range

You forgot to identify your instrument. From your range description, I would guess flute?

Most advanced high school flutists can play from c one line below the staff to D 6 lines above the staff. However, below G {second line on the staff} projection is usually poor and above A{6th ledger line} intonation becomes a serious issue.

Most High school clarinetists can play from Low E {three ledger lines below the staff} to High G{5 lines above} however, the highest note usually written is F{4th space above.

Most high school alto saxes ranges are from
G{second line} to d {second line above}

Hope this helps!!!
