I have just gotten a bassoon from my school. What is good technique on playing the halfhole notes(F#2,G2,G#2) And how do get the high notes out? Mainly from C3 on up.

hey there. I've been playing bassoon for about 5 years and to get the high notes use more air and tighten up you lips. Thats all i can tell you for that.Oh, and a harder reed helps. Dont bother with the half hole thing its not necessary. write me back i'd like to talk.

Hi adam! I was looking for some information for a new student of mine and caught your email. I realize that it's pretty old but thought that I might be able to help anyway. I've been playing the bassoon for 25 years now, (yikes, it's been a long time) and can give you a few pointers. Practice rolling your finger for the half-holes rather than trying to slide it or move it. For high notes, keep your jaw open, just as you do for your mid-range and aim your air flow to the roof of your mouth. You should also use more air pressure - same amount of air just moving a little quicker.

F#2 = left 1st finger 1/2 hole (explore best proportion of hole to be covered for your particular instrument)
2nd and 3rd cover holes - left thumb on crook key.
Right 1st, 2nd, 3rd closed holes - right thumb to close # key.
G2 = as above but without rt. thumb # key
G#2 = as above but with rt thumb on G# key
C3 up = lip and mouth control. Think the note and tone you want. Hollow your mouth gently to acquire 'singing' quality for each note. Practise little and often. Enjoy!
My question = how do you rate the USA Fox bassoons against the European makes? Do you notice any sound quality differences? Do you extend bassoon playing into rock and jazz?

I've been playing the bassoon for almost a year now and getting the half holes covered basically takes a lot of practice. Trying only putting a little tiny bit of your finger on the hole and have the rest of it lay below the hole. To play high, don't use the whisper key and think of blowing up toward the ceiling. If that doesn't work, make sure you have lots of support, hot air, a good reed, and try raising your eyebrows. Hope I could help!
