 recorder as a starter instrument

My daughter started playing cornet in school. Her younger brothers want to play an instrument now too. How do I choose a recorder for a beginner?

Recorders come in a number of different sizes. The one to choose for a child is the Soprano recorder (called the Descant recorder in England). For starting off, a plastic one is good enough. To get a good wood recorder would cost at least £50, $60. Plastic models are much cheaper, but there are a number of really bad plastic ones on the market, which play totally out of tune. If you pay more than £10, $12 you should get a decent one.

I particularly recommend the Yamaha YRS-302B which is slightly more expensive. It has a beautiful tone and plays perfectly in tune. It is also available in "simulated rosewood" as YRS-312B and in "simulated ebony" as YRS-314B.
